"A classic field blend 75% Garnacha, 15% Rufete, 10% Piñuela (Tempranillo to you and me) from high altitude vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos located south of the Castile-León region of Spain. Ripe red fruits, red liquorice and herby spice, and a lovely show of dusty tannins. This presents as serious wine, elegant, ripe and full of complex flavours. Not a blockbuster, more rounded elegant 'pinot noir' take on grenache that is has lots of ripe red fruits with a lovely freshness that quenches the thirst and keeps you coming back for more. Vinos de Montana is a range of mountain wines from high-altitude vineyards in Sierra de Gredos and other historic growing areas in the ‘Sistema Central’, the mountain chain that divides the Iberian Peninsula into its northern and southern halves through Spain. The Mountain Project was founded as a way to reinvigorate and preserve the ancient vineyards, and the communities, of the Sierra de Gredos and Sierra de Gata, as their custodians were facing uncertain futures.
The combination of soil type (blue granite), high altitude sites and old vineyards mean the quality potential in these areas is phenomenal. In addition, they maintain a number of unusual varieties, most of which are not planted anywhere else in Spain. In an effort to preserve these incredible ancient vineyards, Peninsula has begun the Mountain Wine project, partnering with several local growers in the Sierra de Gredos to revitalize the vineyards and their communities. Bravo!
