Collection: France

Few would argue that France is the country that long ago set the standards by which wine is judged. There are of course exceptions; Germany's Rieslings, Spain's Sherry and Portugal's Port are examples of non-French wines that are universally accepted as models to be admired and emulated. But no other country in the world can boast anything like France's influence over the wine world's now well-established benchmarks. The wine styles produced in Champagne, Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire and the Rhone have become targets that countless winegrowers around the world aim at, in the first instance by planting the same grape varieties. If you still have a bit of exploring to do before you can say you know well the world of wine, there can be no better place to start (or finish!) than France.

In times past, Popes would spend their papacy performing tasks of a more spiritual and mystical nature than political. Legend has it that along their long path of spiritual reflection, Popes enjoyed a Côtes du Rhône famous for expressing the richness and abundance of the local land to perfection. The wine was naturally baptised Chemin des Papes, the Path of the Popes.

It has lovely aromas reminiscent of sun-ripened blackberries, dark plums and black currants. Medium-bodied with ripe tannins and a fruity style where you will find dark fruits such as blackberries, dark plums, black currants and a touch of licorice."

“Fine, creamy sparkling… with a deliciously drinkable texture.” Bob Campbell MW

“It's elegant and inviting on the nose with white flesh stone fruit, rockmelon, lemon peel and oatmeal nuances, leading to a finely flowing palate that's creamy and lingering. Beautifully composed and expressed, offering excellent value and charming drinking.”

Clear, bright, rose petal colour in the glass. Perfumed with floral aromas and fresh red berries on the nose. Clean on entry with balanced acidity. Full mouthfeel, enhanced by notes of white-fleshed fruit.

Made from Grenache and Cinsault, the Grenache grapes are grown on clay and limestone soils mainly facing East, while the Cinsault is planted on the plain in predominantly sandy soils. The grapes are picked at maturity in order to combine fruitiness and freshness.

Domaine de la Baume in the Languedoc-Roussillon region is situated in Servian, between Béziers and the medieval town of Pézenas, at the centre of the world’s largest wine-growing area. In this haven of peace and quiet, one road leads to the magnificent wrought-iron gate adorned with a J and a P, in honour of Jean Prat. Domaine de la Baume is an estate of some 176 hectares, planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and of course, Chardonnay.

"One of the most reliable wines we import.  Always fruit forward with just enough oak to make its presense felt, but never overpowers the lovely Chardonnay fruit of white peach and grapfruit. Intense volume on the palate, this Chardonnay is smooth, fresh with vanilla notes. Grilled fish, shellfish and poultry cooked in a creamy sauce."

"Gorgeously complex and enticing, the bouquet shows dark berry, fine leather, roasted nut, dried flower and olive notes, leading to a beautifully weighted palate offering silky texture backed by fine-grained tannins. It's spicy and savoury with rich fruit flavours, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2027."

"The Wine Direct team loved this wine because of its fantastic balance and potential versatility. A great wine for mid-week pasta but also with grunt flavours off the BBQ. Silky smooth Grenache, full of black & red fruits combined with lovely freshness makes this a no brainer to buy by the case"

We’ve been fans of the Bonpas wines for a while but we haven’t managed to get enough wine out of them...till now! We are delighted to bag this rich, spicy Réserve Côtes du Rhône, particularly thrilling in another tasty Rhône vintage. It is a classic velvety Grenache, enhanced with a little peppery, blackberry rich Syrah. Well ripened in the warm sunshine of 2022, and very moreish – Rhône red at its most appealing best.

"This is a gorgeous, velvety Rhône red and offers terrific value. The grapes are from vineyards around Chateauneuf du Pape and share the same stone strewn soil that promotes superb ripeness and richness of fruit. The vines are old and gnarled, producing few grapes but with rare concentration of flavour. The 2021 vintage is a cracker - spot-on with lamb, a robust cassoulet, duck or slow cooked casseroles."

Château de Domazan was built in the 14th century in the middle of Côte du Rhône vineyard, nearby Avignon. The ground is covered with large pebbles that were rolled and rounded on the old Rhône bed. These pebbles that can weigh up to 30 kg are very beneficial to the grapes because they provide excellent conditions for ripening. They store up the heat from the sun during the day and release it slowly through the mild summer nights.

This luscious red perfectly captures the ripeness, depth and sheer drinkability of the best Côtes du Rhônes. Made from the usual suspects from this part of France - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Cinsault.

When it comes to value and flavour, Côtes du Rhône is known for constantly over-delivering.  This new arrival absolutely smashes it out of the park for quality and value. Rich, warming and seductively smooth, Côtes du Rhône from the southern Rhône valley are among the best value classic wines of France. Finest Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from neighbouring vineyards combine beautifully to give herb scented, velvety black fruit, liquorice and spice.
