Doppio Passo Primitivo Puglia 2023

"vino straodinario"
- Luca Maroni

"A blockbuster from a new discovery Doppio Passo.  Primitivo (Zinfandel) from the sun-kissed vineyards Pulgia in Southern Italy. The wine is made by picking the vineyards at two different times producing a greater concentration of flavours and a rich, ripe, and luscious wine exuding ripe dark blackberry, brighter blueberry as well as hints of licorice, and cherry.  The secret of this wine is that it is big and flavorsome but it has a freshness that means it isn’t heavy or hard work.  Super gluggable."

Awarded 96 points by leading Italian wine journalist Luca Maroni this is one of those wines you simply shouldn't miss out on. At $22.99 by the case it's a bit of a bargain. Actually, it's an absolute steal

The Doppio Passo brand is a tribute to Carlo and Maria Botter who, together, founded the company in 1928. Primitivo which comes from the Latin “primativus” meaning “first to ripen” and it is one of the first grape varieties to be harvested in Puglia. Primitivo arrived in Puglia in the 18th century via the Dalmatian coast of Croatia where it is still grown today and known both as Crljenak Kasteljanski. In the early 19th century, it was introduced to the United States, under the name Zinfandel earning a reputation as the American 'national grape'. It is a dark, thick-skinned variety known for producing inky, intensely flavoured wines high in flavour. In Puglia’s hot, sunny Mediterranean climate and mixed sandy, loamy, red volcanic soils it ripens to a high degree with rounded tannins. The grapes for the Doppio Passo are harvested at two different times, one at normal maturity and part picked late for extra intensity, both by hand with soft pressing and careful tannin management to create an opulent, crowd-pleasing style. Perfect for long lunches it goes well with roast pork, red meat, and hearty pastas.
