Koehler-Ruprecht Riesling Pfalz Kallstadter Saumagen Kabinett Trocken 2021

Koehler-Ruprecht Riesling Pfalz Kallstadter Saumagen Kabinett Trocken 2021

93 POINTS: Stuart Pigott, James Suckling.com
92+ POINTS: Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

100% Riesling

Sourced entirely from the Saumagen Grand Cru site in the Pfalz (Koehler Ruprecht opted out of the VDP therefore even his Auslese trockens don't use the term GG even though technically they could be classified that way), left on skins for 12-24 hours before pressing and aged for up to 9 months in big old traditional barrels. All this lends the wine a patinated and textural feel. Densely packed with flavours of citrus and stonefruit, this is delightfully succulent, and very friendly bottle of wine. It’s got honeyed richness, but finishes dry. It comes from the village of Kallstadt in Pfalz, and it will put a smile on your face.

“Striking nose of rosehip and lime zest with delicate wild flower and herb aromas. Simultaneously structured and elegant, this dry Riesling has remarkable concentration for just 11.5% alcohol. Long, silky, mineral finish. Drink or hold.”

“Bottled in early July the this year, the 2021 Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Kabinett trocken is still young and a bit closed on the clear, deep and stony nose. Fine and very elegant on the palate, this is a round, lush, refined, firm and persistently salty Saumagen with a long and intense finish. This is a serious, sustainably intense Riesling with substance and terroir expression after a long hang-time. It needs tine, though. 11.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.”
