Winemaker of the Year: Tim Atkin MW – The Aragon Report 2024
Single site, Organic, Old Vine Red blend of 50% Tempranillo, 30% Garnacha, 12% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.
"This wonderfully complex and profound wine comes from the only Pago in Aragón, la Finca Ayles, which enjoys the influence of the Huerva river and is surrounded by the cliffs and ravines of the San Pablo mountain. Canopy management is key here, to keep yields low and to achieve longer maturation cycles: this is as 'light' a style as can be produced here. The grapes come from a single parcel of mostly Garnacha and Tempranillo which offer up ripe and fleshy red cherry fruit with a fresh core. A powerful, detailed, and delicious red. 2024 - 2028."

Vino de Pago is produced in a very specific area of terroir, with specific characteristics of soil, climate and varieties that make unique, differentiated wines that are awarded the top classification of Spanish wine, “Denomination de Pago.” Today only 23 Spanish wineries have been classified "Denomination de Pago." Pago Aylés was the 10th to achieve the classification in 2010 and is the first and only Pago in the Aragon region. The estate is located in North-Eastern Spain, 30km from the city of Zaragoza with deep roots linked to the history of the province.
This Vino de Pago is a blend primarily of two grapes: Tempranillo (dominant) and Garnacha, with a touch of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from old vines. The Cuesta del Herrero plots feature pudding stones and clay soil with a high calcium content. This composition enables the production of fresh, vibrant wines of high quality, thanks to superior foliar balance and slower grape maturation.
