“Vino de Pago” - A Spanish Grand Cru
Exclusive Wine Direct Import - from winery to consumer!
“Quite polished fruit profile, with aromatic rich berry fruit and some toasty undertones. Peppery palate, with ripe tannins. Long finish.”
- Decanter Magazine
"Great colour and aromatic intensity. Scents of dark fruits from black berry to black currant, roasted Doris plums and savoury dried spices from clove to licorice. Earthy too and with some wood smoke aromas the bouquet has complexity and allure. A lovely wine on the palate, plenty of fruit flavours, dark spice and earthy qualities to reflect the bouquet. War, too with some alcohol noted, the acidity carries all the flavours adding some tension and poise through the palate. Well made, dry and ready to drink."
- Cam Douglas MS
Airaz is the traditional name of the prevailing wind that rocks the vineyards. At 550-650m above sea level Airaz has extreme weather conditions – during summer, there is a fluctuation of over 20ºC between day and night temperatures - which enables the wines to retain freshness and drinkability despite their innate power. The unique terroir is influenced by the Huerva river with plots of exceptional soils - pudding stones and clay with a high calcium component that brings energy to the wines. The estate is certified organic & proudly wears its Vino de Pago, or Grand Cru status.
In the Spanish wine quality pyramid, Pago occupies the highest level, the closest thing Spain gets to a French 'Grand Cru' or First Growth. Finca Aylés, the producer of Airaz, is the only Vino de Pago in Aragón and one of the twenty legally recognized “Vino de Pago” in Spain. To date only 17 high-quality vineyard sites to date have been granted this status by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture and ratified by the EU.
