“Rich and brooding, the concentrated palate offers terrific power and opulence.”
- Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
“A classic bouquet. Balanced and well-made food wine.”
- Cam Douglas MS
Very deep red in color, it reveals candied and roasted notes on the nose. Rich, powerful, finely-balanced, it gives the palate fullness and intensity. Perfect with grilled or slow-cooked meat, pasta al forno and ‘formaggi stagionati’, aged cheese.
Barone Montalto was established in the small town of Santa Ninfa, in the province of Trapani, Sicily in 2000. The company manages around 400 hectares of vineyards in total, the majority of which are located around the winery in the rolling hills of the Belice Valley, 500m above sea level, 100km SW of Palermo. A completely unique blend of Sicilian and French varieties grown on soils composed mainly of limestone and clay, rich in iron in a distinctly warm, Mediterranean climate. Grapes are hand-picked between mid- and late September and arranged in single layers in small boxes of up to 5 kg. Grapes are placed for 4 weeks in ventilated fruit storage at room temperature to slightly shrivel the grapes and make a rich and powerful but finely balanced red. The wine ages for 10 months in small, medium toasted wooden barrels.
