Vallformosa is a family-owned winery, now managed by the fifth generation of the Domènech family. established in 1865 in Vilobí del Penedès, in the heart of Spain's region, The family name first appeared in local history as far back as the 10th Century. Made from the traditional Cava grape varieties of Macabeo, Xarel-lo and Parellada. Their classic Rosato is very pale pink cherry in colour. Fine, persistent bubbles, Clean and bright. On the nose aromas of red fruits like cherries, strawberries and blackberries are presented. Also floral aromas of roses and notes of undergrowth. The palate is intense, fresh, full-bodied and persistent with hints of red fruits. Very fresh and lingering finish with hints of strawberry and raspberry.
This is very good value for money. A Piedmont red under $30! It has good dark fruit, some nice tannins and acid to balance although it would benefit from some more age to smooth it a bit but I liked its feistiness now.
I was happily surprised by the quality of the labels in the "mystery" case of rose wines - great value for the money I must say. Excellent drinking experience from the unfamiliar labels and happy to enjoy again the familiar ones.
