Collection: Carignan

Another variety that has various names and identities around the Mediterranean, being Mazuelo in Spain and Bovale in Sardinia. But Carignan is most commonly associated with the Languedoc region of southern France. It offers fruitiness but also gives stuffing to blends with its firm, dusty tannins and good acidity levels. Old-vine Carignan is particularly worth seeking out, whether it be from the Languedoc or Chile’s Maule Valley; the older the vines, the more concentrated, interesting and characterful Carignan becomes. At its best, individual expressions of Carignan offer a thick red, supple and rounded but with fine, firm tannins and oodles of savoury character.

A classic blend of 60% Grenache & 40% Carignan from spectacular mountain vineyards at 240-280m altitude.

"This, is a blend of Grenache and Carignan, a wine of power but not at the cost of elegance and finesses. A beautiful balance of dark and light. Grenache brings with it huge dark brooding fruit, great concentration and rich texture, whilst Carignan adds freshness, acidity, and bright fruit which marks out this very singular wine."
    - Winemakers Notes

Grapes are from spectacular mountain vineyards at 240-280m altitude. This is truly “heroic viticulture”, with old bush vine, 40-80 years old, perched on steep rolling sites at the base of the cliffs on the northern edge of the Agly Valley, near Queribus, on classic schist and gres (sandy) schist soils. Vines are grown on the limits of each location, unforced and wild.

“A long vatting of 40 days for this blend of the four great grape varieties of the appellation, aged 12 months in barrels, hence this nose which combines candied red fruits and vanilla notes. Perfectly balanced, fleshy and structured by beautiful, coated tannins, this is a Corbières that’s most harmonious, intense and which will age gracefully.”
     - Hachette Wine Guide 2024

A powerful and authentic wine, with silky tannins. From a single NW facing slope on the limestone influenced sandstone of Boutenac.  Sheared by the wind, the old Carignan and Mourvèdre reveal the typicity of an exceptional terroir. Aged 12 months in French oak.

The history of Château Grand Moulin begins in 1985 when Jean-Noël Bousquet left working in a Co-op with a vision to make great wine. He set up his private cellar on the site of an old mill in Lézignan, in the heart of Corbières in Languedoc. Since then, his son Frédéric has taken over and offers a wide range of great Corbières wines, offering all the richness and diversity of the estate’s different terroirs. The Château Grand Moulin estate has over 200 plots of vines spread over 130 hectares, across 5 municipalities all within a radius of 10km. They have been recognised for their high-quality potential and classified as Corbières AOC and Corbières Boutenac AOC. They cultivate the region's classic grapes, namely Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, and Cinsault for the red wines and Vermentino, Grenache and Roussanne for the white.

    100% Cariñena/Carignan
    Organic

"This wine is made exclusively from Cariñena/Carignan (called Samsó in Catalunya) from ancient 80 years old vines grown in poor, rocky and calcareous soil called “tapàs blanc”, from which Romans extracted stones for their buildings. Thanks to soil’s austerity, Cariñena offers a unique expression, with a high concentration, rich in nuances and complexity. Aromas display a series of black fruit and forest berries, along with floral aromas.  The wine’s potential longevity is displayed on the palate, with a smooth entry, full-bodied, complex and a long spicy finish."
