Cal Grau La Petite Agnes 2023
95 POINTS: Wine Direct Tasting Team
“Grown on Priorat's famous llicorella slate soils, this blend of Garnacha and Cariñena delivers intense blackberry and dark cherry fruit, layered with wild herbs, spice and a distinctive mineral edge. Rich and concentrated yet beautifully fresh, it finishes long and savoury with silky tannins and classic slate-driven complexity. A superb expression of Priorat terroir.”
A blend of 50% Garnacha and 50% Cariñena, La Petite Agnès perfectly captures the wild character of Priorat. The style is unmistakably Priorat: rich and concentrated, yet surprisingly fresh. Expect aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, liquorice, Mediterranean herbs and smoky mineral notes. On the palate it combines ripe fruit with silky tannins, vibrant acidity and a distinctive mineral finish derived from the region's slate soils.
The wine comes from Finca La Solana, a 22-hectare estate within Priorat. Vineyards are planted on steep terraces of llicorella, the fractured black slate soils that define the region. These poor, rocky soils force vines to root deeply, producing naturally low yields and intensely concentrated fruit. The combination of altitude, Mediterranean climate, dramatic day-night temperature variation and slate soils gives the wine its characteristic power, freshness and minerality.
