There's an old saying in the Port trade that every wine would be a Port, if it could. These rich, sweet, intensely-flavoured wines certainly demand centre stage. Port comes from the Douro region of Portugal, about 50 miles east of the city of Oporto. The vineyards are steep, the granite and schist soil inhospitable, and the temperatures very hot. Mechanisation is tricky to say the least. The landscape, with the Douro River at its heart, is stunning. This really is a unique wine-producing region. From fiery and sweet to fruity and smooth, to nutty, savoury and mellow, there's bound to be a Port that tickles your fancy!
