Hidalgo Wellington Palo Cortado VOS 20 Year Old 500ml
95 POINTS: Wine Advocate
"The NV Palo Cortado Wellington VORS is produced from Palomino grapes from the Balbaina and Miraflores vineyards, both in the municipality of Sanlucar de Barrameda, where the winery is also located. The wine has a deep amber color, a profound, clean, subtle nose of candied oranges, ginger, hazelnuts, cigar ash and smoke. The complex palate is very gentle, sharp but not aggressive, with clean flavors, great persistence and a dry finish where the orange rind comes back with a touch of beeswax. An exceptional Palo Cortado." - Wine Advocate
The Jerez Cortado Wellington from Bodegas Hidalgo is an outstanding VOS Palo Cortado. The amazing thing about these old sherries is that the winery actually needs to schedule an appointment with the Consejo to unlock the barrels to bottle it. A round, plush mouthfeel of toasted nuts and caramel are enlivened by a saline note that make this dry sherry a treat.
I haven’t tried every bottle in this selection yet, however, so far they are all very tasty. I’m a Chardonnay lover, always on the look out for a dryish not sweet wine and these are just right for me. An excellent mixed case and we’ll priced.
This was a very nice surprise in Wine Direct’s very welcome Plenty Under $20 category. Beautifully fruity, rich and smooth. Often the Plenty Under $20 range is a little light for the depth I like but I will definitely be reordering this one.
A great summer wine… elegant and a fine balance of lighter fruit and delicate acidity with a nice dry finish. Very drinkable with or without food. A nice change from our usual unoaked French Chardonnay
