Windspiel is handcrafted from a potato base and is named after the breed of dog kept by Frederick the Great kept who brought the potato to Germany. Their locally grown potatoes cultivated in rich volcanic soils are converted to a mash which is then heated and mixed with yeast to start the conversion to alcohol.
Soft and spicy potato aromas combines with vanilla flavour and a hint of pear. First a mild, but also spicy potato aroma meets a pleasant sweetness. Afterwards aromas of pepper and honey join them. Creamy and spicy aftertaste.
Makes a perfect Vodka Martini (Shaken):
45ml Windspiel Barrel Aged Potato Vodka
15ml dry vermouth, such as Oscar 697 Bianco
Olives or lemon peel for garnish, depending on preference
Add the vodka and vermouth to a shaker of ice, and shake until chilled. Take a chilled martini glass, add skewered olives or a twist of lemon peel to it. Strain into glass.
I haven’t tried every bottle in this selection yet, however, so far they are all very tasty. I’m a Chardonnay lover, always on the look out for a dryish not sweet wine and these are just right for me. An excellent mixed case and we’ll priced.
This was a very nice surprise in Wine Direct’s very welcome Plenty Under $20 category. Beautifully fruity, rich and smooth. Often the Plenty Under $20 range is a little light for the depth I like but I will definitely be reordering this one.
A great summer wine… elegant and a fine balance of lighter fruit and delicate acidity with a nice dry finish. Very drinkable with or without food. A nice change from our usual unoaked French Chardonnay
