Lapilli Fiano Beneventano IGT 2023
95 POINTS: Wine Direct Tasting Team
“We loved this Fiano, a super serious take on this ancient Southern Italian grape variety. The volcanic layers of soil help to create stunning mineral-driven wine. It displays refined, intense aromas of orange and lime blossom and wild honey with mineral notes. It is rich, dry mineral-driven and textural followed by a long finish with a touch of toasted hazelnut, typical of this grape variety. A memorable, age-worthy wine. Ideal as aperitif, or it is perfect with white meats, shellfish and fish-based dishes. Brilliant wine!”

Fiano is a fascinating, high-quality, ancient Southern Italian grape that has its origins in ancient Roman viticulture and may have been cultivated by the ancient Greeks before them. It is most famous in the hills above Avellino in Campania. This example is from 50km north, around the town of Benevento, where the variety flourishes in the volcanic soils benefiting from both cooling Mediterranean breezes and proximity to the Apennine Mountains. The manually harvested grapes are gently pressed and the must ferments for 8-12 days at controlled temperatures between 15 and 17°C in steel tanks. The wine is then stored at 18-20°C until bottling, maintaining the freshness and complexity that characterize this native vine.
