Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 2023
100-98/100 POINTS: Heiner Lobenberg
97 POINTS: James Suckling/Stuart Pigott
8% Abv, 100% Riesling
“The Rieslings from the Graacher Himmelreich are very exciting in their texture, especially in the early years. Compared to the more harmonious, deeper Wehlener Sonnenuhr, the wines are already very expressive in their youth and often have a rattling acidity. This then becomes more restrained with maturity and the wine sings similarly soft notes as the somewhat more shy Sonnenuhr. Both top sites are excellent long-distance runners. Graach is so insanely open this year, so seductive, but not at all because it is so loud or fat, but it is as fine and polished as ever. The Auslese is even stonier and racier than the expressive Spätlese, madness. What a rock hammer. Extremely fine and silky in the mouth, but so exciting and racy. A whole scree slope comes rushing through, cool and brilliant, precise as clockwork, no botrytis, nothing to distract from the purity. A drinking flow for the gods if you like cool rock wines. Prüm repeats the great sweet wine cinema from all of Prüm's vineyards from Zeltingen to Graach to Wehlen! The Graacher Auslese is my favorite this year, even before the Sonnenuhr.”

“This youthful Mosel riesling Auslese has a vibrancy and precision that is often missing in these wines, blanketed by thick botrytis richness. I love the mint and chamomile freshness that pulls you into this juicy and concentrated wine and also make it very filigreed on the medium-bodied palate. Incredible precision and subtlety in the super-long finish. Try to be patient, because this is a marathon runner. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.”
