Gaja Barbaresco 2019

2019 was a great vintage in Barbaresco, with consistent weather and very few worrying climate events. Good yields, great quality meant the domaines could indeed work with perfect fruit across the whole appellation. Wines in the glass are deep, energetic with pure ripe fruit but without any excess of some of the recent warm vintages. 2019 resembles the 2016, with more power but at the same time more approachability. A fantastic vintage.

“A legendary wine from a Winery that needs no further introduction. The grapes for this wine usually come partly from Barbaresco and partly from Treiso. In the magnificent 2019 classic vintage, the grapes from Gaja's famous single vineyards also went into this Barbaresco. Of course, this was not due to the quality of the grapes in this picture-book year, but to the fact that too many shoots were damaged during a hailstorm in July 2018 for the following year. This Barbaresco is now all the more concentrated and clear. Red heart cherry and sour cherry on the nose with a fine, ethereal aroma. Then in the mouth - BANG! Massive amounts of tannin, which glides over the tongue like a cat's tongue. After a few minutes, delicate herbal aromas and red, fragrant and partly dried rose petals are added. This is a Gaja Barbaresco on steroids with more power and more structure. Clearly made for the cellar. 2019 is such a wonderful, classic year. The balance is terrific, but don't touch this wine before 2027.”

"The 2019s are deep, layered Barbarescos that show the heights of what is possible here.”
— Antonio Galloni Vinous

“I have tasted this wine twice in the last 2 months and both were as memorable as the other. Such joy the 2019 Barbaresco brings, from the glass leap fresh and exciting florals and spiced summer fruits. Bright and lively there isn’t a moment unsuited to enjoying this exhilarating wine. The structure is there to age, but lurks in the background, giving just enough support so as not to dominate the character. I could drink this now, but I must resist temptation. Drink 2024 – 2035.”
— Amy Johnson, Berry Bros.

"Heady aromas of rose, violet, forest berry and a whiff of oak-driven spice shape the nose. Smooth and full-bodied, the elegantly structured palate delivers crushed raspberry, licorice and coffee bean set against taut, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity."
