Ricossa Barbaresco Riserva 2016
GOLD MEDAL; 'Exceptional': Tastings.com
90 POINTS: Falstaff
“Intensely bright ruby red colour with a brightening rim. Lots of fruity aromas of raspberries, blackberries and wild berries on the nose, paired with green pepper, cinnamon, leather and violets, multi-layered. Sweet and fruity on the palate, savoury, some tobacco leaf with aeration, the tannins are vivid, ending with a savoury finish.”
- Falstaff
The history of Ricossa dates to the late 1800s when Lorenzo Ricossa established a distillery on the outskirts of Asti. The distillery grew into the international wine brand it is today, now part of the MGM Mondo del Vino portfolio of wines. “White” soils particularly rich in clay and limestone are compact and impermeable, forcing the vines to root deep in search of water. The result is particularly sparse clusters with small berries that give the wines an abundance of mineral salts, which can ensure their great longevity. The 2016 vintage is perhaps the greatest in Barbaresco for 20 years and rated 98/100 by Wine Spectator. Manual harvest between the end of September and the first week of October. Traditional fermentation and maceration in vat is followed by 12 months maturation in cask and 48 months in bottle. Elegance and structure, with a rich layer of tannins interplay in this Barbaresco Riserva, which is intended for long aging. The bouquet is intense, and ethereal, with distinct hints of tobacco, rosehips and spices. Perfect pairing with red meat, game, mushrooms, aged and savoury cheeses.
