Gaja Rossj Bass Chardonnay 2021

Gaja Rossj Bass Chardonnay 2021

17/20 POINTS: Jancis Robinson MW

90% Chardonnay, 10% Sauvignon Blanc

Often compared to the finest white Burgundies from Montrachet, the limited-production Rossj Gaja is highly sought after by Chardonnay lovers around the world thanks to the decades Angelo has dedicated to demonstrating the potential of Piedmontese wines. When he took over the family business in 1970, he controversially introduced temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and small oak barrels for aging, ushering in a new era for Piedmontese winemaking. Today, he is in the process of passing the reins to the next generation, his three sons, but there is no doubt that his magnificent legacy will endure for decades to come throughout the Piedmont region.

The work of legendary Italian winemaker Angelo Gaja, the Chardonnay-based Rossj Bass is named after Angelo's youngest daughter, Rossana, and ranks among Italy's most sought-after white wines. The addition of a small percentage of Sauvignon Blanc to this Chardonnay has created a rounded, structured wine that exudes grace and refinement. Fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged in barrique for six to seven months,

“The nose explodes with ripe peaches, mango, sweet lemon curd, toasted almonds and hints of fresh flowers and mountain herbs. On the palate, the rich, full structure is balanced by crisp acidity and intense flavors of tropical fruit, citrus and toast that linger long on the tongue. The opulent character of Rossj Bass makes it a versatile pairing for specialty dishes featuring chicken or lobster, as well as milder Asian recipes featuring pork or salmon.”
