“Angelo Gaja creates his wines with broad brush strokes that form shapes of perfect harmony and grandeur, making them modern but never too trendy. The 2019 Rennina is a dark red wine, lush and juicy, with perfect overall integration. On the palate, the strong fruit, oak spices, acidity and a well-tuned tannin hold together the overall composition in an overwhelming and warm embrace.”

“Medium to deep ruby red with orange highlights. Big cherry nose with a hint of raspberry, becoming more perfumed with aeration. A hint of oak adds complexity. Juicy and polished, with soft, fresh red fruit and a layer of fine-grained tannins. Energetic and direct.”

“The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina captivates the taster with a bewitching blend of ash-crushed stones and grilled herbs, fading into red plums and violet pastilles. On the palate, it has a silky texture and a backbone that lends it a sultry character. Salty mineral tones complicate the acidic red berries. Sharp tannins build toward the finish, accompanied by orange notes and a pleasant bitterness that lingers. The Rennina is just standing on its own at the moment, but I am very excited to see where this extremely flavorful Brunello will develop.”

“A powerful red, boasting flavors of macerated cherry, orange peel, plum, lavender, iron and eucalyptus. The dense, dusty tannins emerge on the long finish. Needs time.”

“Sweet cherry, rose, sweet tobacco and a hint of jam. Full and layered. Lots of fruit. Juicy finish. It's savoury at the end and becomes complex and very structured with age. Keep a while. Best after 2027.”

The Rennina bottling comes from three vineyards directly adjacent to the Pieve Santa Restituta winery in Tavernelle and, according to Angelo Gaja, is comparable to Barbaresco. The 2019 vintage was harvested between September 12 and October 1 and brings out the elegant side of Sangiovese. Sweet Mediterranean herbal nuances of tarragon, mint and sage combine with cedar-like oak tones. Bright, smooth and balanced, but with underlying tension, the palate displays red fruit with a hint of bitter orange peel and tobacco. Finely powdered, clay-like tannins cling confidently to the edges, while a mouth-watering acidity permeates the core. Full-bodied but not heavy and with a satisfying crispness, this wine will be approachable before the sugarilla, but should last at least as long.”
— 96 Points, Decanter

The Brunello di Montalcino Rennina from Pieve Santa Restituta is characterized by its balance and the proverbial touch of Gaja Madias, which always brings with it a particular creaminess or concentration of fruit that harmonizes perfectly with the acidity and velvety tannic structure of the wine. The Brunello di Montalcino Rennina Pieve Santa Restituta 2019 is a blend of fruits from vineyards with different soil conditions and exposures. In this classic vintage, you can expect a wine that is firmly structured and important in the mouth, but also with delicate and soft nuances of wild rose, toasted cumin, campfire ash and grilled rosemary. The wine lingers on the palate and offers long-lasting black fruit flavors.”
