GOLD MEDAL: Berlin Wine Trophy 2022

“The Duca di Saragnano Governo Rosso Toscano is a smooth, richly flavoured Tuscan red made using the traditional Governo method, where partially dried grapes add extra depth and softness. Aromas of ripe cherries, dark plums, and a touch of spice, with a full, velvety palate layered with sweet berry fruit, hints of mocha, and supple tannins. Generous, warming and easy to love — it's a fantastic match for pasta, roast meats or hard cheeses.

From the heart of Tuscany and rather than the traditional Chianti style, this is made according to the ancient Tuscan tradition of the “Governo Toscano” where selected and slightly dried grapes are added to already fermented wine. This a second slow fermentation lasting 2-3 weeks resulting in a wine of extra depth and richness. Flavours of cherry,  ripe black fruits and spice delivering lovely balance and acidity.  Big, ripe and delicious. This is a winter classic!

Founded in 1938, Barbanera began as a small family winery in the charming village of Piazza, where it’s still based today. Started by Altero Barbanera and his wife Maria, the winery remained a quiet local operation during the Second World War, with sales limited to the village. But things changed quickly after the war. Demand grew, and their wines — known for great quality and fair prices — began making their way across Italy, earning a loyal following along the way.
