GOLD MEDAL: Mundus Vini GOLD MEDAL: The Wine Hunter 94 POINTS: Wine Advocate 92 POINTS: James Suckling
A single-vineyard Amarone from just 4ha, the Il Bosco vineyard is nestled in the heart of Valpolicella Classico. The grapes loose 30-40 percent of their weight through drying for 4 months resulting in a dramatic, powerful wine. The wine is rich with concentrated flavors of preserved fruit, particularly cherries. Aged in a combination of French and Slavonian oak barrels for 2+ years then in bottle for several more, the bouquet is layered with hints of baking spices, cocoa, and toasted nuts through the long finish. It is a majestic, classic wine of the world that while approachable now has the power and pedigree to age for several decades.
I haven’t tried every bottle in this selection yet, however, so far they are all very tasty. I’m a Chardonnay lover, always on the look out for a dryish not sweet wine and these are just right for me. An excellent mixed case and we’ll priced.
This was a very nice surprise in Wine Direct’s very welcome Plenty Under $20 category. Beautifully fruity, rich and smooth. Often the Plenty Under $20 range is a little light for the depth I like but I will definitely be reordering this one.
A great summer wine… elegant and a fine balance of lighter fruit and delicate acidity with a nice dry finish. Very drinkable with or without food. A nice change from our usual unoaked French Chardonnay
