The fruit for the Barolo Riserva 'San Giuseppe' derives from Cavallotto's 'home-block', the quarter of Bricco Boschis known as Vigna San Giuseppe, that rises steeply behind the family's dwelling and cantina. This has long been considered an x-factor site that has the propensity to deliver a uniquely intense and brooding Barolo. This wine sees a slightly longer maceration and a full four years in botti.

"Alfio believes the San Giuseppe 2017 will be one of the best Barolo's made over the last decade at Cavallotto. Normally 9000 bottles are produced but in this vintage only 6000 were bottled (in February 2023) The hot and dry growing season made for small dense berries with intense but small juice content. The phenolics were near perfect and you can really taste the finesse of the tannins and the underlying structure is one of power married with elegance. The higher elevation and air-flow of the San Giuseppe plot coupled with the higher sand content of the soil gives this great Barolo a freshness in contrast to the more muscular Vignolo Reserva. Alfio loves to drink his Reserva Barolo at 10-12 years of age - so there is not too much time to have to wait! Tasted at the Estate September 2023."

Organic fruit for this wine comes from a small parcel within the hilltop Bricco Boschis cru with 60-year-old vines. The Cavallotto 2017 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows ample texture and softness with layers of dark fruit, plum, dried cherry, baked terracotta and spice. This vintage delivers more accessible fruit overall, and the Cavallotto house style delivers elegance and depth. Production is 6,637 bottles.”

“The dark style of Alfio Cavallotto is, if possible, enhanced here by the natural style of the vintage. This is a cask sample, still in oak and not bottled yet. It has an intense smoky woodland nose, with a lot of mineral earthiness along with liquorice, graphite, tar and earthy dark cherry. Large, powerful and extracted tannins dominate the palate, with crisp, brilliant acidity. A really muscular and angular wine, almost over-extracted and quite biting on the finish, but prepared for the long haul.”
