A little Italian history. A lot of character.

Nero di Troia is one of Puglia’s lesser-known red grape varieties, and all the more interesting for it.

Named after the town of Troia in northern Puglia, the grape comes with a touch of ancient legend. According to tradition, Troia was founded by Diomedes, the Greek hero associated with Virgil’s Aeneid and the famous Trojan Horse.

The grape itself has become increasingly scarce, largely because it can be demanding to grow. Many vineyards were pulled out over the years as growers turned to easier, more commercially productive varieties. Thankfully, some producers still have the passion and patience to do it properly.

"A characterful southern Italian red made from 100% Nero di Troia, a rare native grape from Puglia. Expect generous dark cherry and ripe plum fruit, hints of spice and earthy Mediterranean savouriness, supported by firm but approachable tannins and fresh acidity. Unoaked and full of varietal character, it delivers authentic Italian charm with a satisfying, food-friendly finish. A great match for grilled meats, rich pasta dishes and hard cheeses."
