The history of Ricossa dates to the late 1800s when Lorenzo Ricossa established the Portacomarese distillery on the outskirts of Asti. The distillery grew into the international brand it is today, now part of the MGM Mondo del Vino portfolio of wines. The company also owns, and is headquartered at, the 80-hectare Ca' dei Mandorli estate just outside Castel Boglione, between Nizza and Acqui Terme, 30km (18 miles) south of Asti. The Noceto parcel of this site provides Barbera for the company's eponymous Nizza wine. At 450m it is considered locally as one of the finest positions for sun exposure as it sits on the southern side of the valley, positioned in one of the two deep amphitheatre like settings. The soils are rich in silt, marl and clay.

“This is a seriously good Barbera; the perfumed bouquet shows ripe cherry, raspberry, charcuterie, olive and cedar characters, leading to a wonderfully rounded palate delivering refined texture with beautifully layered mouthfeel. Wonderfully supported by juicy acidity and chalky tannins, making it sturdy and sophisticated at once. At its best: now to 2030 $50.00.”

“Distinctive bouquet of place and time, meaty dark red fruit aromas, baking spices and crumbled soil earthy complexities, some violet and iodine, rustic with pressed flowers and light baked goods suggestions. Firm, dry, textured and complex on the palate. Flavours of gently soured fruits and ripe dark berries, firmish tannins with plenty of acidity, balanced judicious use of oak, just enough to layer in complexity and contrast. Well made with best drinking from 2023 through 2030+.”
- Cameron Douglas MS

“Bright ruby red with a delicate brightening edge. On the nose fresh wild berries, fine peppermint, also elderberries; in the second range liquorice and a touch of dark chocolate. Opens initially polished on the palate with bright fruit and compact texture, plus nice juiciness, minimal drying on the finish.”
- Othmar Kiem, Falstaff
