Gut Hermannsberg Riesling Altenbamberg Rotenberg GG 2021

Gut Hermannsberg Riesling Altenbamberg Rotenberg GG 2021

95 POINTS: Stuart Pigott, James
93+ POINTS: Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

The Rotenberg is a lost world of wine far removed from Gut Hermannsberg and civilization in the valley of the Alsenz, a tributary of the Nahe. A south-facing hillside site, the name comes from the red colour of the volcanic rhyolite soil that results from its high iron oxide content. The Rotenberg wines have enormous mineral expression, it is Hermannsberg’s highest altitude vineyard is also the steepest.

“Vinified in stainless steel and large oak vats, the 2021 Altenbamberg Rotenberg GG offers a discreet, very fine and elegant nose of ripe fruits, crushed stones, wet earth and green tea aromas. Pure and crystalline on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, rather coolish and really cool-climate Riesling with remarkable finesse and savoriness and lots of lemon notes. There is nothing generous here; this an ascetic, linear and very elegant dry Riesling that will gain complexity with bottle age. Good structure and grip here. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022.”
 - Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

“The wild-berry and herb aromas, together with radical minerality and mouthwatering freshness paint a picture of a windswept, precipitous hillside vineyard, surrounded by cliffs and forest. Dark and dangerous at the very long and dangerously refreshing finish. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.”
