Cuevas de Arom Altas Parcelas Garnacha 2020

Cuevas de Arom Altas Parcelas Garnacha 2020

94 POINTS: Wine Direct Tasting Team
91 POINTS: Luis Gutierrez; Robert Parker's - The Wine Advocate

50+ year old vines, off Slate, quartzite, sand, limestone and clay soils at over 850 meters altitude

"Sourced from a selection of vineyards at 600 to 800 metres above sea level, the grapes are wild yeast fermented with 30% whole bunches. The wine is aged for 12 months in concrete to highlight the purity of Garnacha and to preserve the wines’ supple texture.  This wine displays blueberry, blackcurrant and wild strawberry aromas. There are layers of herbs and garrigue notes that add layers of complexity and the tannins are fine grained with a fresh silkiness on the palate.  This is a new staff favourite!"

"The red 2020 Arom is completely different from the wines I tasted before, as it's now pure Garnacha from Calatayud, from vineyards in the villages of Acered, Alarba and Atea on slate, quartzite and limestone glacis soils. It fermented with 50% full clusters and matured exclusively in concrete. 2020 was a very rainy year in Calatayud, a year of cooler temperatures, and the wines are fluid and fresh. This is very primary and fruit driven, tasty and juicy, with fine tannins and very easy to drink. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021."

Once called Arom for Fernando Mora’s last name spelled backward, Altas Parcelas, as the name would suggest, is a blend of all of the parcels Fernando has chosen from the vast collection of vines tended by Bodegas San Alejandro. These vineyards are over 50 years old, 100% head-pruned Garnacha, and planted at elevations greater than 700m. The soils range from sandy slate and quartzite soils to limestone and clay. This cuvée, like all the others that Fernando makes at Bodegas San Alejandro, is picked by hand, includes at least 50% whole clusters, and is fermented and aged in vessels that do not alter the innate character of these mountain Garnachas. In the case of Altas Parcelas, 100% concrete tanks.

The team continue to search for high altitude vineyards to achieve fresher wines and conditions that allow for more precise wine-making, Bodegas Frontonio y Bodegas San Alejandro have joined together to fulfill a common dream: to create one of the best Garnachas in the world during the next 20 years.
